Taking a look at the pre-season top ranked teams participating in the 20th Annual Motor City Roundball Classic.
GRAND RAPIDS UNION RED HAWKS
Coach: Brandoen Guyton (2nd year).
2013-14 record: 13-8 overall (5-5 OK Black, 3rd place).
Key players:Curtis Davison (Sr., G), DeQuaveon Stuckey (Sr., G), Jeff Lee (Sr., G), Keidren Davis (Jr., F), Sergio Diaz (Jr., G), JJ Williams (Fr., G).
2014-15 outlook: With speed and athleticism, the Red Hawks look to soar out of the middle of the pack in the OK Black. No stranger to the Red Hawks’ lineup, fourth-year starter Curtis Davison (6-foot-1) averaged 18 points per game as one of the area’s top scorers. He also finished the season with a 3-point percentage at 57 percent. Dequaveon Stuckey (5-8) is an athletic guard who can pass -- averaging 7 assists per game -- and score to the tune of 14 points per game. Jeffery Lee (6-2) is great in transition and as a slasher guard. Expect Kediren Davis (6-6) to put it up from mid-range and Sergio Diaz (6-3) from 3-point land. Only a freshman, JJ Williams (5-10) has already earned recognition as one of the top players in his class from Prep Hoops Michigan. “We are a quick and athletic team,” Guyton said. “Our guards are strong and so is our 3-point shooting. Our weaknesses are true size and experience. We have a great non-conference schedule with six of the state’s top teams.”
