20th MCRC Girls Previews: Waterford Kettering

Taking a look at the pre-season top ranked teams participating in the 20th Annual Motor City Roundball Classic.

Team Page (Team info, Schedule, Results, Stats)

18. Waterford Kettering (20-4, Class A)  Detroit News

20. Waterford Kettering 2013-14 record: 20-4.

Outlook: The four-time defending KLAA North champ could be headed for its fifth straight title if it can defend quicker teams and come through with dependable play at the point. Lauren Tewes (Gannon), 5-10, is a highly skilled player capable of playing guard or forward. With Julia Kroll (Lawrence Tech), 6-0, and junior Haley Tewes, 5-11, the Captains have two more players who can score inside and on the perimeter, and all three are solid with the ball. Sophomore Lillia Schoof, 6-0, can help with rebounding and inside scoring.        Detroit Free Press

8. Waterford Kettering (20-4)
The Captains are consistently one of the best teams in the entire Kensington Lakes Athletic Association and this season will be no different.  Led by seniors Julia Kroll and Lauren Tewes are the senior leaders while Lauren's younger sister, Haley, will add valuable talent after a strong sophomore year. Kettering's all around size gives them an advantage against most opponents. Mlive

20th MCRC Girls Previews: Detroit Country Day

Taking a look at the pre-season top ranked teams participating in the 20th Annual Motor City Roundball Classic.

Team Page (Team info, Schedule, Results, Stats)

16. Detroit Country Day (23-2, Class B)  Detroit News

17. Birmingham Detroit Country Day 2013-14 record: 23-2.

Outlook: With five freshmen and five sophomores, this is a young team, but there is plenty of talent. Sophomore Destiny Pitts, 5-10, is a do-it-all kind of player. Kristina Grace, 5-9, has been an undersized post, but she will move to forward with the emergence of 6-2 sophomore Tylar Bennett. Jordan Wright will score with slashing moves to the basket. Junior Arika Tolbert is a good point guard. Sophomore Sheldon Bochenek, 6-0, will help with rebounding and scoring in the paint.       Detroit Free Press

9. Detroit Country Day (23-2)
Destiny Pitts is coming off of a great freshman season and is pegged as one of the best sophomore players in the entire state. With her leading a young but talented group of scorers, Country Day will once again be a power in Class B and should be destined for another deep playoff run. Mlive

20th MCRC Girls Previews: Southfield Lathrup

Taking a look at the pre-season top ranked teams participating in the 20th Annual Motor City Roundball Classic.

Team Page (Team info, Schedule, Results, Stats)

7. Southfield-Lathrup (18-7, Class A): Lathrup returns all five starters from a team which lost to eventual state champion Birmingham Marian in the regional semifinals. The Bello twins return — 6-3 juniors Taiye (16 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks) and Kehinde (six points) — along with junior point guard Antoinette Miller (12 points), sophomore guard Deja Church (12 points) and 4-11 guard Kendall Terrell.

"This is the most athletic team I've had, even more athletic than the state championship team (in 2005) and we have great chemistry," Lathrup coach Michele Marshall said. "We can press and get out and run or score in the halfcourt set. Kehinde Bello is our most improved player. She had a great AAU season."    Detroit News

9. Southfield-Lathrup 2013-14 record: 18-6

Outlook: This is still a young team, but look for an improved season from this talented squad. The junior Bello twins — 6-2 Taiye, who averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, and 6-3 Kehinde, who has improved dramatically — give the Chargers quite a tandem in the post. That will open the perimeter for sophomore Deja Church, who averaged 12 points as a freshman. Junior Antoinette Miller does a good job distributing the ball and can score when needed. Cydney Ellis, a transfer from Ferndale, will help in a variety of ways.      Detroit Free Press

4. Southfield-Lathrup (18-7)
The Chargers competed for an OAA league title a year ago and will do so again. Twin sisters Taiye Bello and Kehinde Bello will be a force near the basket, each standing 6-foot-3. In fact, the entire starting lineup from last year is back. The Chargers have carried high expectations year after year and will look to get back to a title game 10 years after it won its first and only state title. Mlive

Lathrup was in the division race to the very end last season, but came up just short. With nearly the full roster back intact, the Chargers should take a step forward. Lathrup has twin sisters Taiye Bello and Kehinde Bello, each 6-foot-3, to help in the frontcourt, with junior Antoinette Miller, senior Kendall Terrell (Adrian) and sophomore Deja Church also ready to contribute significantly this year. Lathrup finished 18-7 last season and lost in the regional round to eventual Class A champion Bloomfield Hills Marian. Mlive

4. SOUTHFIELD-LATHRUP (18-7, 2nd in OAA Red): Last year’s Chargers — hampered by injuries to upperclassmen that exposed some of the youngsters to more playing time than maybe they could handle — might not have been ready for prime time, but everyone could see the potential. With all five starters — and eight players in all — returning, led by the highly-recruited Bello twins (Taiye and Kehinde) now the Chargers have to turn that potential into production.  MiPrepZone

20th MCRC Girls Previews: Ypsilanti Arbor Prep

Taking a look at the pre-season top ranked teams participating in the 20th Annual Motor City Roundball Classic.

Team Page (Team info, Schedule, Results, Stats)

8. Ypsilanti Arbor Prep (22-4, Class C): Arbor Prep advanced to the Class B quarterfinals last season, losing to eventual state champion Eaton Rapids.

Well, now Arbor Prep has dropped to Class C where it is set to make a run for the championship with an experienced, talented group led by the backcourt of 5-9 junior Nastassja Chambers (offer from Detroit), Zakiya Wells (Northwood) and Payton Sims (42 3s). Karlee Morris, a 6-0 post player, averaged 10 points and 12 rebounds last year and will play at Concordia. Sophomore Adrienne Anderson came off the bench and scored 22 in the season opener.    Detroit News

4. Ypsilanti Arbor Prep 2013-14 record: 22-4.

Outlook: This Class B quarterfinalist will be the team to beat now that it is in Class C and an overwhelming favorite to win the state title. Nastassja Chambers attacks the basket from the wing and finishes well. Senior Zakiya Wells (Northwood) is a four-year starter who is an exceptional point guard. Karlee Morris, 6-0, is an exceptional jumper. Payton Sims, 5-10, is a three-point specialist. Sophomore Adrienne Anderson is good in transition and plays tough defense.     Detroit Free Press
