Day 1 is in the books for the 19th Annual Motor City Roundball Classic where nine contests took place including the final three that came down to the wire.  Two of the games were in a tournament format.  Here are the standouts from the day's earlier games and the results of all nine.

6’4” 2014 wing Javon Henderson (Detroit University Prep) 19 first half points paced the bigger Panthers’ team.  He made mid-range and perimeter shots off the bounce combined with the athleticism and skill to be a scholarship player.  He finished through contact leading to multiple and one opportunities and pushed the ball in the open court while working to the basket in an efficient manner in half-court sets.  MVP with 30 points and 8 rebounds.

6’1” 2014 point guard Juwan Hampton (Southfield Bradford Academy, MI.) Quality handles, smooth, aggressive scorer from the perimeter and in.  He shot it very well from the corners off the catch and showed a solid mid-range pull up game.  He finished as easily with either hand when going to the basket. 

6’2” 2016 wing Jalin McFadden (Southfield Bradford Academy, MI.) A transfer from Detroit Cass Tech, he has the skill, length, and athleticism to add further depth to the state’s 2016 class.  I thought he was Cass Tech’s top jv player a year ago.  He scored on the short block, mid-range, and is transition through contact.  He’s playing the 1-4 for Bradford. 

6’2” 2015 sg Nick Robak (Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, MI.) Very good shooter who made point guard decisions and rebounded well.  Dad and uncle are on the WOLL bench and the lineage showed in his versatility.  He’s a good athlete with strong grades and a great small school prospect. 

6’1” 2014 gd Pakiya Ellis (Detroit Allen Academy) One of the state’s most aggressive scorers and he proved that with 44 from all over the court, but also added six assists, and six rebounds with three steals.  Ellis' 44 came on 18-26 from the field (4-8 3fg) and 4-6 from the line.  He has the athleticism and skill to play somewhere on the D1 level.  (pictured with his MVP award)

6’5” 2016 wing Daniel Pippen (Detroit Allen Academy) Extremely effective scorer from the perimeter, finishing drives, and on offensive put backs.  He rebounded well and while he’s skinny he has the athleticism and length to make up for his lack of girth.  He totaled 17 points on 7-9 shooting and was 3-4 from the corners.  Another sophomore adding to the state’s depth.

6’ 2016 point guard Jason Williams (Detroit Allen Academy) He was often the playmaker for teammates Ellis and Pippen and produced eight assists while adding fifteen in the scoring column.  He defends and makes the right decisions.

5’9” 2014 shooting guard TJ Felder (Fraser, MI.) He will need to add some playmaking to his game for the next level, but he can shoot going 4-7 from the perimeter accounting for the bulk of his 16 points.  He also grabbed seven rebounds.

CMU bound Cassie Breen looks to lead Woodhaven back to Downriver League Championship title

25. Woodhaven (Class A, 21-4): Outstanding guard Cassie Breen (14.5 points, 4.5 assists) and junior forward Allison Manning are among three starters from a team that shared the Downriver League title and advanced to the regional championship game. Breen will play at Central Michigan.

14. Eaton Rapids

2012-13 record: 18-3.

Outlook: Nine seniors and every key player return for what should be an excellent season. Allie Dittmer (Hillsdale), 6-1, is a big scorer (18 points, 11.5 rebounds) who has stretched her offensive game. Bailey Baker, 5-10, will help inside and has improved her ability to put the ball on the floor. Kathryn Mills, 5-11, can play anywhere but in the post and will play some point. Emily Reinecke, 5-11, is a point guard who now can attack the rim and is a calming influence. Meghan Dassance is a good shooter. and sophomore Emily McCostlin is a defensive stopper who adds perimeter shooting.
