Dark horse: OAK PARK (11-8) . The Knights have their third head coach in four seasons, as former Birmingham Detroit Country Day star Peggy Carr-McMichael takes over for the departed Diane Jones after two seasons. She has plenty to work with, as Kadijah Lucas and Amber Davis both made the all-OAA squad as juniors..MiPrepZone

21st MCRC Girls Previews: North Farmington

Taking a look at the pre-season top ranked teams participating in the 21st Annual Motor City Roundball Classic.

Dark horse: NORTH FARMINGTON (12-10). The Raiders went 9-1 in non-conference play last regular season, but just 2-8 in OAA Red play, and were bumped down to the White after the season, where they easily could contend for a league title.

North Farmington returns five seniors, four juniors and a sophomore with varsity experience, and should be most solid in the post, with 5-11 junior Kierra Crockett, 5-10 senior Alexa Cherney and 6-0 sophomore Sam Cherney. Junior Kelly Lusk gets the task of replacing Megan Carter (Kent State) at the point, while junior Sam Randel’s knees are finally healthy, allowing her to vie with classmate Sophie Muller for the last starting spot, or the first spot off the bench. -

21st MCRC Girls Previews: Birmingham Marian

Taking a look at the pre-season top ranked teams participating in the 21st Annual Motor City Roundball Classic.

BIRMINGHAM MARIAN (26-1). The Mustangs lost Brittany Gray, Jaeda Robinson and Kara Holinski to graduation — all three are playing college ball this winter — and the Thomas sisters, Sam and Bailey, transferred to Nevada, when their father, former Marian assistant Derek Thomas, got a job out there. That leaves the Mustangs without any of the starters from the last two championship seasons, and a huge hole to fill, experience-wise.

Senior center Elizabeth Grobbel and junior forward Madeline Laurencelle are the two remaining experienced players, with a combined seven varsity seasons. Maria Hickey is the only other senior on the roster, but she and Isabel Hayes were both on the roster for last year’s title run, as well.

Freshman point guard Olivia Moore has already shown flashes in her first few games, but needs time to grow into her job..
